Water Skiing in North Carolina

No matter how much I exercise, nothing prepares me for water skiing! I always find muscles I forgot I had…especially when I don’t ski but once or twice a season. Los Angeles doesn’t offer easy lake access. (And I’m too lazy and spoiled to buy a boat and haul it around California.)

My friend and client, Peter Catalano, turned me on to Coble Ski School a year ago. April Coble is an international water ski champion and her husband, Chris Eller, is one of the world’s top boat drivers. (April’s mother, Shirley, is my true hero. Shirley is 63 and won fifth in the National Water Ski Championship this year.)

Here I am with April, (who not only just returned from Europe and Florida, but flew in from California on the red eye that morning…sheeewww) on the dock of Lake One.

You probably guessed that it’s April skiing in the newsletter. Here she is on her new PINK Goode ski (a fork-lift ran over her ski case and broke her old ski right before the tournament in Europe! Major bummer!) Watching April ski is like watching art in motion

Water skiing has been a passion ever since I was about eight. I thought about going professional but obviously I didn’t. Since I don’t ski that often, I’m just happy I can still get up behind the boat! (Okay…that’s a lie. I dream of winning tournaments and nailing those orange buoys at 39 off like April. It will never happen.)

I asked my sister, Laura, to take pictures of me skiing so I could see what I was doing. Here are her photographs:

(Thanks, Sis. I give you props. You’re a good sport.)

Coble Ski Camp is down home. It’s intimate. It’s family. And it’s like going back to summer camp as a child. If you’re into Loving Life and Feeling Great (and don’t mind a bit of soreness), plan to attend the relationship/ski week next May. I’ll be posting dates and details as time approaches.
